The Bonneville Speedway, found at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Northwest Utah, is an area of public land that has been used for motor sports since 1912. Primarily, it has been a site used to record land speed records – the first of which was set in 1914 – with the most recent record of 630.48mph being set in 1970. The current fastest land speed record of 760.34mph was set at Black Rock Desert in Reno, Nevada in 1997.
While the majority of cars used to record these ludicrous speeds are powered by jet, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL seen here, driven by Albert L.Schmidt was powered by Mercedes' 3.0L M198. Produced between 1954 and 1957, it was capable of reaching speeds up to 163mph, and was the fastest production car of its time.
